| Meaning: Aperture is the opening in a lens through which light passes to the sensor to create an image.
How it functions: Aperture size is usually caliberated in f-stops (f-numbers). The Higher the f number the smaller is the aperture. The common f-stops are f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/8 etc. The aperture also defines the depth of field. Smaller the f-number, larger will be the depth feild and vice-versa. Thus, you can focus on certain objects for getting special effects.
