The first UMPC introduced by Gigabyte had several innovations which were not seen on other brand models. UniChrome Pro II graphics core powers the display of Gigabyte UMPC U60.
Design
The screen of Gigabyte UMPC U60 is 6.5" touchscreen. Its original resolution is 800 x 480 but it capable of 1024 x 768-pixel resolution.
Core Information
The U60 holds a 1GHz VIA processor with 768MB of memory which is not expandable so it is not suggested to modify the default Windows XP operating system to Vista as the latter requires 1GB of RAM to run smoothly.
The webcam which is present in the notebook is positioned just above the LCD. The webcam can be used for taking pictures or video conferencing. The notebook supports VGA resolution which is not very appropriate for very good quality of images. The battery lasts for around 3.5 hours which is not very far from the 4 hours claimed by the manufacturers. Although Gigabyte UMPC U60 cannot be used for whole day computing but it can be used to surf internet at Wi-Fi spots. One thing to keep in mind over here is that the device turns hot after being used for an hour constantly but still it is not uncomfortable to use. For increasing the battery life it is necessary to have the incorporated graphic solution. The Gigabyte U60 has no problems surfing the Internet and performing basic productivity tasks as it is great on consumption. You can log-on to sites like YouTube and other video-streaming pages without any problem.
Cutting Edge Technology
The expansion port can be found under the flip stand of the Gigabyte UMPC U60 and accessories like GPS and TV tuner are available in the notebook. A slot is located at the bottom for use with the docking station. The docking station considerably increases the functionality of the U60 by providing a VGA output, 10/100 Ethernet port, three USB 2.0 ports and headphone jack. A spare pen is provided with the spring loaded stylus holder.
Conclusion
On its own, the U60 is works very well in the connectivity department. It has two USB ports and can hook up with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) networks easily. An SD card reader which is also SDIO-compatible is also included for reading memory cards.
It is a very useful laptop to have. Go for it!!!
Cons : size, splitting the keyboard is not ideal nor is the slider design.
If a UMPC is not jacket pocket size then you either carry a "man purse" or stuff it in your brief case. In the latter, you might as well have a full blown laptop since the slightly thinner and smaller size does no advantage since it is not jacket size. What is needed is a jacket size UMPC with a touch type keyboard. Bring back the popular clamshell form factors. With such weak designs 2008 is not going to change UMPC sales, util they realize the functionality of what the market needs.
