Sony Ericsson-W960i similar to the P1i, the W960i employs a jog-wheel on the left side of the handset, which is pressed in to make selections. On the right of the phone are volume adjustment keys and a dedicated camera button for opening the camera app and firing off photos. At the base of the phone is a standard Sony Ericsson input port; used for charging, USB connectivity and as a Sony Ericsson headphone jack. As with all music-focused phones, we'd love to see a 3.5mm headphone jack, but it seems we'll have to accept that Sony Ericsson may never give us one; the upside to this being that the bundled headphones offer excellent sound quality.
The Sony Ericsson phone, on the other hand, will use UIQ, which is a Symbian-based interface. Many people compared the W960i with the iPhone because of their similarities. Onboard memory of 8GB, touch screen LCD, and both marketed as strong multimedia devices. The bright 2.6-inch QVGA (320x240) display is large enough to make good use of the touch screen functionality, and a stylus, tucked away on the top-left corner of the phone, is on hand to help with some of the smaller, larger-than-finger selections, of which there are plenty. If somebody is buying a camera-phone may not use only the camera features. He probably might want to listen to music, too. That's where the line begins to blur and the average consumer's options start to expand. The newer range of Cyber-shots is now fitted with a more elaborate music player and the Walkmans with a better camera module.

Camera
As noted briefly above, the 3.2-megapixel camera is a gem, and out-does even some of the 5-megapixel camera phones we've seen recently. As with the rest of the phones operation, there is considerable lag entering camera mode and after you've pressed the shutter, but the auto-focus is sharp, the flash is bright, and overall the images we took looked great. the Sony Ericsson phone's camera will feature a flash, but more importantly will have auto-focus capabilities. In the past, we've been pleased with the image quality from Sony Ericsson's Cyber Shot phones, which use Carl Zeiss lenses, so the W960i is the one we're keeping an eye on, in terms of camera.

Design
Its realy concerning, the lack of a keyboard on the iPhone, for every aspect of the phone. The Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices, the touch screen keyboards, even simple numeric pads, just don't cut it. There are three touch-sensitive music playback keys between the keypad and the LCD on the W960i. These are visible only when the Walkman player is active Above that is the 2.6-inch 240 x 320-pixel touch screen LCD that is flush with the surface. They Still, just look at the iPhone and you want it. It has all the design appeal of the iPod, simple and clean with a symmetrical look and one-button design. Above that is the 2.6-inch 240 x 320-pixel touch screen LCD that is flush with the surface. The screen is protected by a layer of plastic, so you are not actually poking at the display. What we are more concerned. The Sony Ericsson W960i is a very nice looking phone, very slim and glossy, and we're generally fans of Sony Ericsson's designs. Still, the iPhone is something completely different. Sony Ericsson uses a very straightforward approach--Cyber-shot for camera-phones and Walkman for music.

Performance
The W960i runs on a 220MHz ARM9 processor -- as used previously by Sony Ericsson in the P1i, amongst others -- which is inadequate for performing the various tasks required. Some applications and menus can take five or more seconds to open, and even then, we encountered serious lag-spikes when trying to perform simple tasks, like accessing album lists in the Walkman player, or creating new SMS messages. The more we used the phone the more these lag spikes impaired our experience of the W960i.

I would say tht u still shouldn't go for this phone......5800 has all the types of input methods that W960i has,, even the number pad method (but the numbers appear on the screen),, and that too the screen is bigger so it is easier to type,, but still its your choice!!

A true high-end smartphone
User Prashant - Post Date :22/02/2009

An interesting mix of business and music features enlarges W960i's target, widening its desirability. Excellent sound, high WiFi speed and 8GB storage space, as well as very fast USB data transfers speeds also rise its functionality. I should also mention the great battery and camera, which are well above average. A true high-end smartphone, Sony Ericsson W960i should be placed at the peak of SE's range of business phones.

Sony Ericsson W960i
User mithlesh - Post Date :22/02/2009

Recommend Product : Yes

Pros : Awesome features list, lots of text input options, 8gig memory, great walkman player, PDA functionality

Cons : Only 208mhz processor, quirky UIQ OS, not a lot of apps available, fiddly camera

The features list speaks for itself. All that's left to do is to set it up properly and get used to the UIQ interface in order to take advantage of all those functions. The only limiting factor is the processor 208mhz is quite low spec for this type of smartphone. Camera is fiddly. For good pictures, you have to press the camera button on the side halfway, this helps the phone focus and lock on its subject. After it's locked, you press fully. So, it's a 2 process thing, you have to first focus and lock before you take the picture. That's why it seems to take long. Walkman function needs its own review. It's simply amazing and rivals any stand-alone mp3 player out there. It's got a simple, yet elegant interface and the graphics are very engaging especially after setting up moods for your songs.

Pros : Features are awesome

Cons : Design is great but not perfect, Usability can be frustrating at times.

Unfortunately my phone has just been sent back for repair as a software fault has meant I can no longer send text messages, this is ok though as I have received a free replacement handset and the W960 is being repaired for free under the warranty. I have had the phone since March 2008 and have been very happy overall despite this problem.

Plus the possibilities with this phone are endless. The compaitbilities of this phone is remotely similar to that of a pc. I only had this fone for a short while but fell in love with it. There are so many applications and games available for this phone because it can basically use applications from UIQ , and regular phones.

Sony Ericsson W960i Review
User Siraj - Post Date :08/06/2008

Recommend Product : Yes

Pros : Touchscreen Keypad, 8 Gb on Board memory, walkman, Unbeatable Organiser, Symbian OS.

Cons : 15FPS video recording, no 3.5mm Audio Jack, No Edge, No IR, plastic stylus, no HSDPA.

Design: This bar handset measures 109 x 55 mm and weighs around 119 grams (battery included). These numbers are not too much for a Smartphone, even if it lacks full QWERTY keyboard. Instead, Sony Ericsson W960i features a standard keypad, which might seem a little bit crowded. Keys are wide but there's no space in between them, which might cause a 'lag' when texting messages. Otherwise there's nothing bad about it, as the compound used for manufacture has been skillfully chosen. This might be one of the few Smartphone that won't be a fingerprint magnet, even if used heavily. A nice contrast between the glossy front and mat back cover adds to the glamorous look. Right above keypad layout, you will notice three touch controls that will be enabled the moment you start using the music player. The touch keys controlling the music player are pretty responsive, mostly thanks to the huge touchscreen display. Above the screen, one can see the benefits of the UMTS technology â?? a second camera used for video calls. On the mat back cover of the Smartphone the 3.15 Megapixel camera module is the main attraction. It features dual LED flash and autofocus. The big external speaker placed right near the camera enables users to listen to music together with their friends. Sony Ericsson 'borrowed' the power up button from Nokia and placed it on top of the handset. Both sides of the Smartphone feature few buttons such as: dual volume keys and camera button on the right side, and a jog wheel to ease the navigation through the menus. The bottom of the phone features the usual universal port specific to Sony Ericsson handsets, which can be used to charge the phone, to sync it with your PC or to attach the earphones. There's also a stylus that you can use with the touchscreen on top left of the phone, above the jog wheel. This might look (again) like a phone especially created for left-handed persons, but you'll get used to it. Display and Camera: The 2.6'' TFT touchscreen supports 262k colors, 240 x 320 pixels resolution, those that are looking to record clips should know that the camera doesn't score too good as a video-camera. It is only able to shoot in QCIF mode with a maximum resolution of 320 x 240 pixels at 15 fps. Lower resolutions (176 x 144 pixels) enable the possibility of capturing movies at 30 fps, but the image is low on details. The Smartphone comes with 128 MB RAM and 256 MB flash (96 reserved for Symbian and 160 user memory). The phone lacks any microSD slot card for memory expansion, but it comes with 8GB storage memory, which makes the slot card useless. The Smartphone includes an RDS radio that can store up to 20 stations. All in all, the phone features the true sound of a Walkman series handset, so any fan of the series can get the phone â?? it will not disappoint you. The music player can read MP3, AAC, AAC or e-AAC file formats and features DRM function. For Detailed Review: http: //sirajrangwala. blogspot.com/
